The heart of the island, Phuket Town may lack a beach but with a deep history, plenty of character and one of the most fascinating festivals in the world it should be on your itinerary. As the capital you can also be assured that there are a host of superb Phuket Town hotels to choose from.

As one of the few places in Thailand to experience colonialism, Phuket has kept onto a few remnants from that era and Phuket Town in particular is home to some fantastic period architecture. Aging Sino-Portuguese houses and shops full of character can be found down Thalang Road, Soi Romani and Dibuk Road. These hundred-plus year old buildings are the product of Phuket's once booming tin mining industry which bought immigrants, commerce and riches to the island.

Unsurprisingly Phuket Town caters incredibly well for restaurants, nightlife and shopping. Blue Elephant is a classic high end restaurant set in a beautiful old Chinese mansion and well worth visiting while bars and clubs are springing up across the town with Rassada Road being a popular hangout. During the day, venture up to Khao Rang Hill for some spectacular views across southern Phuket or if you have time check out Monkey Hill. The views aren't as good but, as you can probably guess, there are plenty of monkeys to feed and keep you entertained.

If you happen to be staying in one of our Phuket Town resorts in late September and early October you'll be in for quite a visual spectacle. During this period of the year the vegetarian festival takes place. Near the Jui Tui Chinese Temple locals celebrate this by piercing their faces with sharp metal objects. Yes, you read that correctly.
